As a national confederation of trade unions and a network of professional associations and partners across all industries in Singapore, the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) strives to assist working people of all collars, ages and nationalities achieve gainful employment through better jobs so they may lead higher quality lives through higher wages.
Positioned as the voice for the people and of the people, it has been championing employees’ rights for over 50 years and it continues to work tirelessly to ensure fair employment practices, just laws and favourable working conditions.
The organisation achieves these through three key thrusts.
CARE NTUC cares for its working people and supports them.
FAIR NTUC ensures workplace practices are fair and their interests are protected.
GROW NTUC grows its working people so that they may grow with NTUC as one strong and inclusive Labour Movement.
NTUC’s success is attained daily through the myriad of branches and arms that work harmoniously towards a common vision and goal. Six diverse individuals from varied backgrounds share the meaningful work they do every day and the motivations that keep them going strong.
Terence Kam Kuan Lin
Principal Specialist, Manufacturing
Employment and Employability Institute (e2i)
“I have a strong belief in helping people around me. After seeing an opening at NTUC’s Employment and Employability Institute (e2i), I knew it was the right place for me. The company is made up of a diverse community with unionists and leaders from various industries. Fresh university graduates who join NTUC will learn how to manage people and problem-solve, gaining a fruitful working experience. My most fulfilling experience is working with business owners to understand their industry and the workers’ environment. Friendships are established along the way as we discuss strategies on creating better jobs and employees for the industry.”
Susan Woo Ying Fun
U Small & Medium Enterprises (U SME)
“We work towards enhancing fair employment and workplace practices and providing ways to train and upgrade the skills of working people. The ability to understand employers and employees’ needs and contribute back to society and NTUC’s vision adds meaning and purpose to my work. Working in a matrix organisation is beneficial because there are many organisation-wide activities to expand and establish new working relationships with colleagues from other departments. I am able to tap on various resources to further engage and forge collaborations to achieve our common goals.”
Shalini Sharon Gupta
Senior Industrial Relations Officer
National Taxi Association (NTA)
“I was drawn to the unique nature of the role that I can improve the lives of NTA members with the work I do everyday. No two cases are the same and I learn a lot from the challenge and diversity of the cases. I handled a case where a member met with a terrible accident. While we immediately rendered our assistance to him and his family, they were resistant to our help and did not feel comfortable opening up to us. However, we did not give up and it took us almost a year to complete the claims for them. Despite the hard work, it was worth it because it paid off and I was able to make a difference in their lives.”
Migrant Workers' Centre (MWC)
“NTUC has developed me into a better person. I am able to empathise, communicate better and understand people around me more. The avenues to develop yourself and your potential are abundant and readily given. The existing career prospects allow you to advance at your own preferred pace. Individuals who are passionate about what they do are never going to be dragging themselves to work. With the job satisfaction you stand to attain from working at NTUC, be it catering to the needs of a Singaporean or when you are championing for workers’ rights, it will ignite a long lasting passion in you to serve others and the community.”
Heidi Lee Hui Ying
Senior Specialist (U Startup)
Professional Networks Department (PND)
“NTUC has a vibrant culture with many opportunities to gain exposure on both the grassroots and top management level. You will learn about servant leadership and how to cultivate a myriad of skillsets that are not taught in textbooks. Branded as the ‘Unusual Labour Movement’, NTUC is a rapidly evolving organisation which welcomes new ideas and fresh blood. Employees can look forward to working in an optimally challenging yet fulfilling job role, pillared by supportive management and friendly colleagues. The work arrangement and welfare benefits that NTUC offer are also attractive, making it an ideal place for fresh university graduates to commence and build their career at.”
Christopher Jason Eu Jian Wen
Senior Industrial Relations Officer
United Workers of Electronics &
Eletrical Industries (UWEEI)
“I wanted to do something purposeful and meaningful and didn’t want to be deskbound or confined to the office every day. I chose NTUC because they believe in growing people and investing in us. It is a people-oriented environment which centres on trust, empathy and care. This in turn allows me to excel in my role and make a difference in the lives of the members that I serve. I derive job fulfillment when I achieve a favourable outcome for my member who have had a dispute or grievance with his employer. My role allows me to right a wrong, be a voice for the oppressed and fight for workers’ rights.”
